Electrocardiogram (EKG)
What is an EKG?
EKG or ECG stands for an Electrocardiogram. It is a test that records the electrical activity of your heart through small electrode patches that a technician attaches to your chest, arms and legs. The test is painless, quick and safe. Your doctor will be able to check for:
- Your heart rhythm
- Diagnose a heart attack
- Check for abnormalities of the structure of the heart
- In some situations detect electrolyte abnormalities
How should you prepare?
- Wear clothes that can be easily removed for placement of electrode patches on your chest, arms and legs.
- Avoid greasy or oily skin creams/lotions as they prevent the patches from making appropriate contact with the skin.
- In some instances men with chest hair, might require trimming/shaving of a small portion of their chest.
